About HKH

Haines Knob Handwovens is based in Washington, DC and on Haines Knob, a 1300-meter promontory of Rich Mountain in Randolph County, WV.

I am Carla Brenner, and I started HKH in 2013, after retiring as an art historian and writer. I encountered my first loom as a young girl and have been weaving, on and off, since I was a teenager. In 2017 I opened a new studio with two old barn looms and one designed and built by my dad. I also have a loom in DC. Although I did study briefly at the Penland School in North Carolina, I am mostly self-taught. All the bad habits are of my own invention.

Some time around 2014 I was lucky enough to become a member of the Canaan Weavers, which met and sold work at Ben's Old Loom Barn in Davis, WV. It was a real cultural treasure, begun by Dorothy Mayor Thompson, who learned to weave in the late 1930s,  and continued by her daugther, Sarah Fletcher. Unformatetly, Sarah passed away in the spring of 2023 and the Loom Barn closed. Weaving group members are now meeting at individual's houses and hoping to keep the tradition going.
