the looms

I use three looms in the studio. Two are old, one is innovative, and all have family connections.

The old looms are usually referred to as barn looms. Probably this is because they share the same mortise and tenon construction as, and were probably made by, the same folks who made barns in the community. Others suggest that the name is derived from a German word, Bauernwesbstuhl, which means ‘farmhouse loom.’ Or maybe, it is just because barns are where so many of these looms ended up!
